our founders story
Wangu W. Mureithi is a third-generation British Kenyan tea farmer, who has made it her mission to continue her family's legacy of farming tea in the highlands of Kenya. She has taken the vision, one step further through the exploration of the endless possibilities of the camellia sinensis plant.
Her journey in the tea industry begins with her grandfather, Mzee Washington Mureithi who was an agricultural pioneer in the 1950’s, until he died in 1977. He is remembered for his efforts in encouraging his community to buy land, plant tea and engage in other farming activities that would boost the local economy. Wangu’s great-grandmother plucked, withered and sun dried her own tea leaves from her son in law's tea garden and served her grandchildren hand-processed teas, a skill that she passed down to Wangu’s father, that Maison Chai use today.
Wangu grew up deeply passionate about tea, both in terms of its powerful familial and social importance as well as its economic significance globally. She continues her grandfather’s legacy, by working with trusted advisors and mentors who empower her by sharing their wisdom and expertise to help realise her vision; of showcasing responsibly sourced teas from around the world, on the global stage.
